Why Greek marbles are suitable for use on a kitchen countertop or in a kitchen area & how to choose the right marbles for the kitchen project you have undertaken

A kitchen is not just a functional room where we prepare a meal, cook and eat our food, but rather a space for creative expression and to satisfy aesthetic needs. With simple, clean, minimalist or more classic lines, a kitchen and every space in it must acquire value and form of an investment. Choosing the best, most beautiful and durable materials for your kitchen counter or island is, without a doubt, of utmost importance.

Marble, as a natural material, can become the perfect choice for a kitchen countertop or any other part of a kitchen (floor, kitchen backsplash, wall cladding, sinks, etc.). As a key design element, a marble countertop allows an opportunity to create different combinations and colors, while the sense of luxury it gives is rightly complemented by its variety, uniqueness and of course its timeless durability.

What is marble

Marble is a stone that is characterized by an intense glow and etymologically comes from the ancient word “marmaros”, which means “bright stone”. Created by a continuous metamorphosis of sedimentary carbonate rocks, via a chemical reaction in limestone and through its veins, clouds and unique formations, it captures something of its history. It consists mainly of the mineral calcite with other minerals from clay, quartz, muscovite, pyrite, iron oxides, chlorite, graphite, etc. usually found in its mineralogical composition (impurities). Commercially, the term marble refers to many structural and decorative carbonate stones mainly of a composition such as limestone, etc.

It is an amazing material whose modern possibilities are applied to decoration and architecture.

Reasons Homeowners, Decorators, Architects, Builders and Project Managers choose marble for kitchens and kitchen countertops.

Natural beauty of marble

As a natural stone, marble is found in a huge range and at the same time with a rare uniqueness. Its luxury and natural luster justify the fact that it is such a popular material among many homeowners, but also with architects and decorators. Its natural beauty glorifies the space and becomes its irreplaceable protagonist.

Uniqueness of marble

The geological load that marble carries is reflected in the distinctiveness of its formations. Veins, clouds and patterns unfold in a wondrous and unique way justifying the perfect aesthetic result.

Color variety and availability of marble

The color variety of the stone satisfies every particular preference and decoration desire. White marble, with a white background or colored marble with a dark background, turns the kitchen into a timeless space that captivates the eye. Focusing on the project, the owner’s preference and personal style, the choice of color is the only consideration because, as long as the earth propagates the material, the availability of marble remains inexhaustible.

Resistance of marble over time

The glorification of the material over the centuries and the transformation of marble into structures that have withstood the passage of time have proven its durability. Marble countertops resist heat, water and abrasions. In fact, by choosing the right coating, marble in the kitchen area becomes waterproofed and protects its porous material from stains.

With the help of modern technology, the surface finishes of marble highlights not only its natural beauty, but enhances its durability even more. Finishes, such as polished, honed, tumbled and brushed, are applied to the surface of the marble slab, enhancing the appearance of the material and contributing to its stability and minimization of wear and tear over time.

Resistance of marble to changes in temperature

Marble is characterized as a “cold” material, due to its resistance to high temperatures. It is one of the reasons why it is used on surfaces that concern us in regards to durability, such as on kitchen countertops, ovens, fireplaces and generally wherever a robust, durable and at the same time, timeless material is needed.

In it, you will find all the information you need about the suitability of the two materials, not only for kitchen countertops, but also for floors and bathrooms.

Ways to maintain and clean marble on a kitchen counter and other kitchen areas

A functional and organized kitchen countertop needs the corresponding care. The first concern is to get to know the technical characteristics of the marble from which the countertop is made and to follow its care instructions.

To ensure long-term protection of the marble countertops or kitchen islands, we recommend waterproofing using the sealer process, in which the marble stone slab is coated and becomes more resistant against saturating liquids, such as oil, wine or juice. With the sealing process, the marble will not stain; all that will be needed is regular cleaning.

However, even if the marble has not undergone waterproofing, take care of it with simple and easy actions:

  • Use soap and water to remove stains
  • In the case of a matte finish surface, avoid any rough cleaning material
  • If the marble is stained by red wine, we suggest you remove it with water and baking soda

As the kitchen is the area where food is prepared, some scratches or gouges caused by hot appliances, acidic food and liquids (such as lemon juice) or cutting boards are unfortunately inevitable. If you want to protect your kitchen countertop or island and limit wear and tear and discoloration, opt for fireproof bases for very hot items.
